Some home kitchens would fail restaurant inspections

A new study suggests that at least one in seven home kitchens would flunk the kind of health inspection commonly administered to restaurants.

The small survey done in Los Angeles County found that less than two-thirds of home kitchens would get an A or B if put through the rigors of a restaurant inspection and at least 14% would fail.

Denny Rehberg was in Butte today touring and learning about a business that brings millions of dollars to the community.

Rehberg met with Rod Alne, the owner of Peak Inc., a company that trains people how to move and survive in wilderness environments. They train many people in the military as well as some commercial businesses.

Ceremony for Butte firefighters to be rescheduled

A ceremony to honor firefighters who fought the flames and helped get residents out safely at the National Hotel Building in Butte will be rescheduled

Five firefighters were to be recognized at Wednesday night's council of commissioners meeting. However, due to a mix-up and scheduling issues the firefighters could not be there.

Fire Chief Jeffrey Miller spoke about the bravery and selflessness of the firefighters. In return the audience gave a standing ovation.

Butte man pleads no contest in antiques store fire case

A Butte man pleaded no contest to misdemeanor negligent arson involving a fire that damaged an antiques store in Uptown Butte.

Andrew Stebbins, 19, appeared before District Judge Kurt Kruger Thursday morning. The charge stems from a fire intentionally set in September 2009 behind Raven Lode Gifts and Antiques on West Broadway Street.

Stebbins was also charged with arson involving the Vu Villa Pizza but as part of a pre-trial agreement the case was dismissed.

A 60-year-old man pleaded not guilty to his ninth drunk driving charge with a reported blood alcohol level almost three times over the legal limit.

Chester Kaczmarek appeared before District Judge Kurt Krueger Thursday morning in Butte. He was arrested in July along Harrison Avenue in Butte. When he appeared in Justice Court his face was swollen with injuries he received when officers say he fell out of his van landing face first on the road.

Sentencing put on hold for accused Three Forks murderer, may withdraw guilty plea

A Three Forks man who admitted earlier to killing his ex-girlfriend may now withdraw his guilty plea after his attorney raised questions about a "huge problem" he encountered while reviewing the pre-sentence report.

Jay Myran, 38, appeared in court for sentencing Thursday afternoon; but the hearing barely began before Myran's defense attorney, Peter Ohman, put it on hold.

Squirrel statue nabbed from Fairmont Hot Springs Resort

A four-foot squirrel statue worth $600 was stolen from the miniature golf course at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort.

The squirrel played a crucial role in the game at hole 14. Butte-Silver Bow Police Captain George Skuletich says the department was notified of the squirrelnapping Tuesday afternoon.

The squirrel is made of fiberglass and if you happen to spot it, you're asked to notify police.

A friend and fellow pilot took to the air Thursday to pay tribute to a Belgrade man who was killed when his helicopter crashed in Idaho earlier this week.

Pilot Mike Carisch climbed inside his own red and white chopper and towed a 20-by-30-foot American flag banner behind him in memory of Perry Krinitt, 43, who was killed in Kamiah, Idaho while he was on a fish counting job. Two biologists were also killed in the crash.

The North Butte Roadside Hazard Sale is open for public firewood cutting.

Most of the available wood is in landing piles within the sale area, five miles north of Butte and to the west of the Elk Park exit on I-15 within the Freedom Point, Lowland and Irvine Ranch area.

Forest Service (FS) roads where the landings are located include: FS roads 5001 and 5094 (Olsen Gulch area); 9485 (Hail Columbia); 1537, 5047, and 9422 (Konda Ranch area); and 442 (Lowland Creek).

The Rimrock Humane Society came to the rescue of two baby goats that somehow got trapped on the pillar of a 60-foot high bridge between Billings and Roundup.

The goats were spotted on the ledge on Wednesday morning; Sandy Church of the Rimrock Humane Society said it's not yet known how the animals ended up in such a precarious predicament.

A Belgrade pilot who was killed in the helicopter crash in Idaho knew at an early age he wanted to fly helicopters, his mother said Wednesday.

A 29-year-old man will spend 15 years behind bars at the Montana State Prison for trying to lure an 11-year-old girl to have sex.

Montana's Secretary of State Linda McCulloch's is encouraging people to get out and vote by declaring September 2010 National Voter Registration Month.

Butte adds to 'boot' collection

Five new boots have been donated by the Butte Police Protective Association.

The boots or wheel locks join six others that have been purchased by Mariah's Challenge and the Mile High Lions Club for a total of 11 boots. They are used to immobilize vehicles of DUI offenders and ordered by a judge.

The program was started in July, and local judges have already given the punishment out to a few offenders.The boots are left on cars for 30 days.
