Tipping the scales at 3,000 pounds. That describes a steer at the Montana Livestock Auction on Tuesday.

His name is Cletus and he's noticeable larger than any of the other cattle at the auction. He's 10 years old and spent most of his life at the Mcintosh Ranch in Avon. But today, Cletus was sold at the auction to a buyer from Minnesota for a little more than $1,670.

The auction scales measured him at 2,950 lbs. That's about the same as a compact car. He's the biggest steer the auction has ever seen and his former owner said he's sad to see him go, but he's got to be practical in this business.

"The cattle market is about as high as we're apt to see it, I think, and finally I can get a little bit of the feed bill back. He eats a lot, ya know. Cattle will eat 3 percent of their body weight, and so he's eating 90-plus pounds of hay a day in the winter time," said Bill Mcintosh.

Mcintosh said the Cletus never ate anything special just hay and grass all his life. Mcintosh also added that he's not sure if he can top Cletus in size, but he's going to try to bring an even bigger steer to the auction in the future.
