Blaine County undersheriff dies after being hit by vehicle while directing traffic

Blaine County Undersheriff Patrick Pyette has died after being hit by a vehicle on Highway 2.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Butch Huseby with the Montana Highway Patrol, a truck broke down between Harlem and Chinook on Wednesday night, and Undersheriff Pyette was directing traffic through the area. Huseby says that Pyette was struck by a motorist passing through the scene who did not see the officer in the roadway.

Pyette, 54, was transported to Benefis Hospital in Great Falls where he died.

MHP is still investigating. Huseby does not know if there will be any citations against the driver who hit the deputy.
The Havre Daily News reports that it happened at about 5 p.m.
We have dispatched reporter Erin Schermele to Blaine County and will update you as we learn more.

Blaine County was rocked in June when county official Marvin Edwards died in a crop-duster plane crash.
