MSU football players hit Bobcat Stadium for a half scrimmage on Wednesday, but a rash of injuries caused a change of plans, yet the team made important strides.

The running game was to be the focus under the brutal sun, Coach Bo Beck coached up the d-ends. His depleted line made MSU coaches hold off on pounding the rock, but they still were pressuring the passer.

Although Head Coach Rob Ash couldn't see his running backs in the line of fire, he did have a chance to see how his team would respond in the crucial moments that soon await his Bobcats.

"That is the middle of the toughest week of camp. They had two practices Monday, one yesterday, two today. It's hot. That's good. We waited until the end to do the fourth quarter bit. And we want to be good, that's one of our themes this year is to be good in the fourth quarter and we talked to our guys about being tough when you're sore and tired and hot and banged up a little bit. Play smart, play well in those situations," Ash said.

Things are still on track for the Bobcat offense to receive a shot in the arm from its backfield this season. New position coach Kerry Dixon has a deep and talented pool of running backs in his platoon and maintains the bell cow position for his segment is wide open as reps are being split evenly between CJ Palmer and Cody Kirk. Ultimately though, one man must shoulder the workload for the 'Cats.

MSU scrimmages again this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. as the backfield competition at running and quarterback chugs along.
