Dozens of emergency crew personnel gathered at an Auto Body Shop in Butte Wednesday evening for a lesson on extricating people from wrecked vehicles.

About 85 people from 18 area fire departments got to practice extrication on newer vehicles after two hours of classroom training on the subject.

Their trainer says this is a vital learning experience because cars are constantly changing to increase vehicle safety. The emergency crews are learning how to get someone out of vehicles made with the newer high strength materials. They're also learning about battery location, how to deal with live air bags, and vehicle fires. It's an education that could save lives.

"If an individual is in an accident from the time a rescuer arrives they can rest assured to the time they are transported to the hospital they will receive maximum efficiency in that process. When a fire department arrives their life is going to get better," trainer Bob Brown said.

The crews also learned the science behind hybrid cars and how to extricate someone from those vehicles.
