A project highlighting the Irish culture in Montana is getting some funding help from Humanities Montana.
The nonprofit awarded the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives a $3,548 grant to support the "A Montana Ireland Exhibit," which will consist of nine panels interpreting the immigration of the Irish and their influence on the culture of Montana, along with select oral histories from the Gathering Project and the manuscript and photograph collection of the Archives. The exhibit will be enhanced the first year by public presentations by Ciara Ryan, Bernadette Sweeney, Cronan O'Doibhlin and Ellen Crain.
"This project builds on an earlier grant to support The Gathering," Ken Egan, Humanities Montana executive director, said in a news release. "What a fine opportunity to explore the Irish presence in Montana culture."
The exhibition schedule begins at University of College Cork in Cork City, Ireland from July to September 2012. October through December 2012 it moves to the University of Montana in Missoula. From January to March 2013 it will reside at the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives before moving to Butte High School in April and May. The exhibit will then begin a summer festival tour.
