Fires burning in the Gallatin National Forest

UPDATE: The Gallatin National Forest currently has seven confirmed fires from thunderstorms over the past couple days. Today the Forest picked up one additional fire on the Gardiner Ranger District in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. Another fire, the Moser Fire was found late last night. Both fires have remained as single tree, lightning caused fires and are staffed with fire personnel. The Bozeman Creek Fire is in mop-up currently.

UPDATE - Bozeman, MT -The Gallatin National Forest currently has six confirmed fires from thunderstorms over the past couple days. Last night a new fire, the Moser Fire was identified in the Hyalite area and crews are on scene today. Recreationalists are urged to use other trails throughout the Forest and to not go above the first bridge (approximately 5 miles) on the Sourdough Trail up Bozeman Creek . Weather conditions are predicted to remain hot and dry with isolated scattered thunderstorms across the Gallatin National Forest throughout the weekend.
Moser Fire
Start date: July 28, 2012
Cause: Lightning
Location: Bozeman Ranger District: T3S, R6E, Section 30
Current Size: Approximately 1/10 acre
Resources Assigned: 1 Forest Service engine plus chase (4 personnel)
Current Status: The Moser Fire was identified Saturday night as a single tree fire burning in dead and down fuels. Crews are hiking in this morning and a full size-up report will be provided later today.

Bozeman Creek Fire
Start date: July 28, 2012
Cause: Lightning
Location: Bozeman Ranger District: T3S, R6E, Section 27
Current Size: Updated acreage 1.5 acres
Resources Assigned: 15 smokejumpers, 1 Type II Helicopter with bucket and one 20 person handcrew.
Current Status: The Bozeman Creek Fire is burning mid-slope in heavy dead and down fuels. A Type II 20 person handcrew arrived on the fire this morning and will be working with the smokejumpers to establish and secure a fire line around the perimeter of the fire.

South Fork Fire
Start Date: July 28, 2012
Cause: Lightning
Location: Hebgen Ranger District: T13S, R4E, Section 11
Current Size: Updated acreage 4/10 acre
Resources Assigned: 2 Engines: 1 USFS, 1 Hebgen Basin Fire District
Current Status: Crews marked this fire as contained yesterday and will be checking on it today.

Cottonwood Fire
Start Date: July 27, 2012
Cause: Lightning
Location: Yellowstone Ranger District, Cottonwood Creek within Big Creek Drainage
T6S, R6E, Section 29
Current Size: Approximately 1/4 acre
Resources Assigned: 8 Smokejumpers
Current Status: Smokejumpers have an established fire line and continue to mop-up in heavy timber.

Mile Creek Fire
Start Date: July 27, 2012
Cause: Lightning
Location: Hebgen Ranger District: T12S, R2E, Section 36
Current Size: Approximately 1/10 acre
Resources Assigned: 1 Forest Service engine
Current Status: The Mile Creek fire was a single tree fire with ground fire around the base. The fire is marked as contained and personnel will be checking it today.

Dead Deer Fire
Start Date: July 28, 2012
Cause: Lightning
Location: Yellowstone Ranger District: Elk Creek Vicinity in Main Boulder Drainage.
T3S, R13E, Section 34
Current Size: Approximately 1/10 acre
Resources Assigned: 1 Forest Service engine
Current Status: The Dead Deer Fire remained as a single tree fire. Crews have marked the fire contained and will be checking it today.

UPDATE -Five new fires burning in the Gallatin National Forest, all being blamed on lightning.

The Bozeman Creek Fire burning south of Bozeman in the Sourdough drainage broke out this afternoon. It has burned about two acres. 15 smoke jumpers are on the scene working to establish a fireline. A helicopter is also helping douse the flames. A 20 person handcrew is scheduled to arrive Saturday night and hike to the fire in the morning.

The South Fork Fire also started Saturday. Its only about 2 tenths of an acre burning in lodgepole pine and grass. Crews are on scene and have established a fire line around the perimeter. The fire is contained.

The Cottonwood fire started Fridayin the Yellowstone Ranger District. Its burned about a quarter acre. Eight smoke jumpers are assigned to the fire. Right now they're mopping up in heavy timber.

The Mile Creek Fire also started Friday in the Hebgen Ranger District. This fire is under control and burned just one tenth of an acre.

Finally, the Dead Deer Fire tarted Saturday in the Yellowstone Ranger District. This fire burned one tenth of an acre and is under control

A fire burning in the Gallatin National Forest.

The fire broke out Saturday afternoon in the Sourdough drainage south of Bozeman. It has burned 1 to 2 acres. Eight smoke jumpers are on the scene of the fire and a helicopter is on the way.

One fire official told KBZK it's very likely this fire will be contained and not come closer to Bozeman.
