Jeremiah Gideon of Great Falls has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a Helena police officer on Wednesday morning.

It happened just after 9:30 a.m. near the intersection of Cedar Street and Roberts Street.

During a routine traffic stop that did not apparently involve him, Gideon reportedly began yelling at the police officer.

Gideon then allegedly punched the officer in the face.

Several police officers then responded to the scene.

Helena Police Chief Troy McGee said, "There was a brief struggle, the person then took off running, the officer chased after him and ordered him to stop, and he finally got down on the ground and stopped. The officer kept him at gunpoint there until other officers arrived and then they arrested this person."

Gideon is being charged with felony assault on a police officer.

It is not yet known if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The police officer involved did not sustain any serious injuries.
