A Lodge Grass teenager received his sentence for crimes in a drunk driving accident last year that killed one person and paralyzed another on Thursday.
Jeremy Flatmouth, 19, had earlier pleaded guilty to four crimes and on Thursday, family and friends testified for Flatmouth and for the vicitims.
Judge Gregory Todd sentenced Flatmouth to 30 years in the Montana Sate Prison with 15 years suspended for vehicular homicide while under the influence of alcohol. Flatmouth also received 10 years for felony negligent vehicular assault and one year each for two counts of misdemeanor vehicular assault.
All of the sentences run concurrently and he also must pay restitution of more than $490,000.
Flatmouth kept his head down for most of the sentencing testimony and told the judge he was sorry and took responsibility and said he will never drink again.
The accident happened on August 8, 2009 on the Zimmerman Trai and all five people in the car were ejected, including 19-year old Joshua Yarlott-Old Bull of Lodge Grass who was killed. Meanwhile, Cyril John Not Afraid, Jr. was paralyzed from the waste down as a result of the crash.
Judge Todd said Flatmouth's blood alcohol level was .17, more than twice the legal limit, after he he had consumed 10 beers and four shots of Southern Comfort. The judge also told Flatmouth the sentence provides possibilities to prove himself by his actions and to validate what some testified on his behalf.
