The Montana Highway Patrol reports that one person is dead after a crash and fire in the westbound lane of I-90 at the Pipestone exit northwest of Whitehall.

The latest information from MHP troopers at the scene is that there was no one else in the vehicle; for a time, rescue workers at the scene believed there may have been a second person in the vehicle.

Pictures from the scene, taken by Montana's News Station reporter Chet Layman, show rescuers near the burned out vehicle.

Reporter Jamie Leary reports that the vehicle was headed west on the interstate when it jumped into the median, slammed into an embankment, plunged 20 feet between the two bridge decks and burst into flames.

Rescuers at the scene say the flames were too intense to reach the driver.

Law enforcement personnel at the scene say the vehicle is a small pickup truck with Gallatin County license plates.

It is not yet known what may have led to the vehicle leaving the highway.

The name of the victim has not yet been released.
