A lawmaker wants to clarify Montana law to allow the retail sale of beer in growlers.
The bill states a retailer, such as a tavern or bar, can sell beer in a growler for off-site drinking.
Currently many retailers already fill growlers, but the law is vague and the Department of Revenue wanted some clarification about what was legal and illegal.
The bill sponsor Sen. Ryan Zinke says this allows Montana breweries to compete with bigger companies.
"The brewing industry is growing across the country, and small things we can do to help a micro industry in Montana I think are good," Zinke said.
The bill states a growler is a sealed container and any retail establishment can fill them. The growler can be provided by the consumer.
