Mount Ellis Students hike namesake mountain to raise money for Pakistan

Mount Ellis Academy Principal Darren Wilkins said Friday he's trying to teach his students that when you receive a blessing you need to give back. The Seventh Day Adventist School, Southeast of Bozeman, was recently awarded $500,000 in a contest sponsored by Kohl's Department stores, which will go toward a new sewer system for the school. On Friday, the students hiked their school's namesake mountain to raise money for Pakistan Flood Relief.

37 students, or about half of the school's student body made the climb starting about 9:15 AM. The students were all finished by 3:30 PM. The top six fundraisers for the project were even given a lift down off the peak by a helicopter.

All told, the students raised $6,000, which will be given to the Bozeman based Central Asia Institute and the Adventist Development and Relief Agency.

Pakistan experienced severe flooding following heavy monsoon rains in July of this year. Mount Ellis had a Pakistani exchange student last year and Wilkins said that made the event feel close to home.

Mount Ellis is still accepting donations to the effort on their website, and will also be taking them during a celebration event for winning the Kohl's Cares Contest.

That event will take place October 16th.
