The north-east entrance to Yellowstone Park remains a high altitude culdesac today thanks to powerful snow melt that's swollen the Lamar River and Soda Butte Creek.

The road through the Lamar River Valley from Tower Junction to Cooke City remains closed for a second day as work crews try to stem the damage.

Runoff from the river and creek chewed through the right lane of traffic on Friday due to the high amount of snowmelt in the area.

Since the water showed no sign of stopping and was beginning to eat away at the left lane, park officials shut down the road until they could stabilize the washout.

According to Park Spokesman Al Nash, crews continued their efforts today.

Nash says the road remains closed and travel to Silver Gate and Cooke City is not possible.

Nash had no estimate on when the road will be re-opened.
