A situation involving a man who chained himself to the Greek Café building in Butte a day before it is to be demolished ended peacefully Monday morning.

Brian McGregor, a concerned citizen with a sign reading "This Place Matters," was removed from the building after 9:30 a.m. His chain was cut and he left peacefully, according to Sgt. Raymond Vaughn. McGregor may face charges.

Officers now plan to increase security and patrols at the site, Vaughn said.

While the building isn't slated for demolition until Tuesday, equipment is already on the scene Monday morning. Just as McGregor was leaving, a crane arrived.

Some have voiced their displeasure with a decision to demolish the building.

On Thursday a complaint was filed by Butte attorney Susan Callaghan on behalf of Butte Citizens for Preservation and Revitalization, Mark Reavis, Nicole Von Gaza and Richard Gibson. The complaint asked the court to determine whether Butte-Silver Bow and the Butte-Silver Bow Council of Commissioners violated open meeting and public participation statutes and provisions of the historic preservation commission ordinance. An opposition was filed by the city-county.

But District Judge Brad Newman denied the request for a preliminary injunction based on the fact the plaintiff did not meet their burden of showing that preliminary injunctive relief was an appropriate remedy in the case.
