As you work on your taxes there's a few new things this tax season that may help you when filing.

There's a new federal energy credit and also the new American Opportunity credit that allows students to deduct books and class materials, something students have never been able to do before. New homeowners aren't the only one getting credit for buying a new home. A $6,500 credit is now available for anyone buying a new home that lived in their old house for at least five years. Donations to Haiti can be included in your taxes as well.

"Anyone who wants to donate to Haiti, you can donate up to March 1 and still take that off 2009's taxes," Kristy Driscoll, a tax preparer with Mary Walsh CPA said.
