A hospital spokeswoman says the condition of a woman injured in a tornado in northeastern Montana has improved and her outlook is favorable.

Billings Clinic spokeswoman Julie Burton says 71-year-old Barbara Smith's condition was upgraded from serious to fair on Thursday. That means Smith's vital signs are stable and she is conscious.

A tornado packing 150 mile-per-hour winds ripped Smith's house from its foundation Monday night 13 miles west of Reserve.

Smith was pulled from the rubble in the basement, where neighbors and authorities found her next to her dead grandson, 10-year-old Robert "Robby" Richardson. The body of her nephew, Steven Smith, was found 200 feet away.

The National Weather Service says the tornado was the state's deadliest since 1923.
