MHSA takes action on 2016 Class C football re-alignment

Posted: Updated:

The paint is barely dry on the 2015 fall sports season, and it’s already increasingly likely that Class C football in 2016 will look drastically different.

On Monday, the Montana High School Association took preliminary action on re-alignment proposals throughout the state. Those actions included re-assigning 5 perennial 6-Man football power house programs to the 8-Man ranks.

Defending champ Denton-Geyser-Stanford and state runner up Box Elder were among the teams designated for reassignment. The others were Hobson-Moore-Judith Gap, Lone Peak, and Westby-Grenora. All five were 2015 playoff teams.

The MHSA declined Gardiner’s request to move from 8-Man to 6-Man, but re-classified Bainville, Noxon and White Sulphur Springs to 6-Man.

A final decision on the actions will be made at the annual MHSA board of directors meeting held in Billings, January 16-18. In the meantime, schools will be able to present commentary to the board if they wish to block the actions or remain in their current classifications.

The cutoff enrollment for schools participating in 6-man schools is 65 students. All 5 programs re-assigned to 8-man football surpassed that threshold. However, participation numbers are considered as well so schools with low athlete turnout may petition to remain in the 6-man division based on those figures.

If the re-classification rulings are upheld, the Class C divisions will be as follows:

2016 6-MAN FOOTBALL

North: Augusta, Big Sandy, Geraldine/Highwood, Heart Butte, North Star, Sunburst, Valier, White Sulphur Springs
