MSUB severs ties with head golf, volleyball coaches
By Q2 Sports
Montana State University Billings head volleyball coach Lisa Axel and head golf coach Shawn O’Brien have been relieved of their duties effective immediately, according to the school's athletics department.
Axel recently completed her fourth season with a career record of 37-72 overall and 25-49 in conference play. MSUB finished 6-23 overall in 2015, 5-15 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference competition.
Men’s and women’s head golf coach, Shawn O’Brien, will not return for the spring season.
During O’Brien’s first season he guided the women’s team to its second-straight NCAA tournament appearance and led the team to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament title. The following year the women’s team joined their male counterparts in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The MSUB women finished 2nd and the men 5th at the 2015 GNAC championships.
“We want to thank both coach Axel and coach O’Brien for their service to the university and within their respective programs, and wish them all the best in their future endeavors,” said Yellowjackets' Director of Athletics Krista Montague. “It is important we move quickly in the search process to find the best coaches for these programs moving forward.”
A national search for MSUB’s next head coaches is underway. Members of the athletics administration will serve as contacts for volleyball and golf student-athletes in the interim.
