Bomb threats made against Montana Supreme Court, Lewis & Clark County Courthouse

Posted: Updated:

The Butte Courthouse was evacuated this afternoon after a bomb threat was called into the building.

In Butte on west granite street, an employee with the courthouse received a call about 1:25 in the afternoon that sounded like it had been a pre-recorded message stating that bombs were in the building and would be detonated if the inmates in the nearby jail were not released. The courthouse was evacuated and Butte police and fire department blocked part of West Granite Street in front of the building. Butte Sheriff Ed Lester said nothing was found in the building and employees were allowed to return after about an hour.

Police are calling in investigators with Homeland Defense and the FBI. Police say a similar incident was reported in Helena, but it has not been determined if it is related to the one in Butte

Sheriff deputies evacuated the County Courthouse after a bomb threat that took place in the afternoon on January 14th.

Lewis & Clark County Deputy Clerk of Court Angie Sparks says someone called the Helena Municipal Court saying to release all prisoners or a bomb will go off in 20 minutes. Sparks says it was scary when a deputy came into her courtroom to say a bomb threat has been made.

“If the bomb goes off we could die and that is a serious threat to our community, to us workers and the community that needed to get out of there,” said Lewis & Clark County Deputy Clerk of Court Angie Sparks.

A bomb dog has been called in to search the surrounding area.

HPD Lieutenant Brett Petty says there was also a bomb threat called in at the Montana Supreme Court Chambers around the same time.  He says the City of Butte is dealing with a bomb threat as well.
