Obituary: Joan Cecilia (McGrath) Tomich

On Tuesday, December 27, 2016, our dear Mother and Grandmother went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Joan was born to Kathaleen Burke McGrath and Al McGrath. She was the oldest of the three McGrath children, her brother Tom and her sister Mary. Her Mother later married John Sweeney who became her step-father. Joan with that union was blessed with another sibling her youngest brother Daniel R. Sweeney.

Joan attended local grade schools and was a graduate of Butte High School. She attended Western Montana College of Education and received a bacheIor’s of science degree and went on to attend Montana State University where she received a Master’s degree in Elementary Education. Joan made a life career of teaching elementary school in Butte, Montana working for School District #1.  Joan taught students at the Longfellow Elementary School, Blaine Elementary School, and she ended her career teaching at the Margaret Leary elementary School. She enjoyed her students and was proud of her

accomplishments as an educator.

Joan married William Donald Tomich on August 22, 1960. Joan and Bill made their home in Butte, Montana raising their two children William Donald Jr. and Davene Cecilia. They were blessed with three grandchildren that filled their lives with joy. Joan and Bill later moved to Missoula, Montana after their retirement in 1989. Bill passed away in December of 2012. Joan and Bill were married fifty-two years.

Joan enjoyed her visits to Butte visiting her daughter Davene, son -in-law Bill and their family. Joan enjoyed her last years watching a new generation being brought into her life having two great-grandchildren and the excitement of two more on the way. The last two years being able to enjoy her great-grandson Jaxon Duncan brought her joy and always a smile to her face. During her last days, Jaxon gave her comfort when he would stand next to her and tell her a story or give her a drink of water.

Joan was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and in earlier years enjoyed bowling.

Joan was preceded in death by her Husband William Tomich and their infant daughter Anna Marie, her Father Al McGrath and her Mother and Step-Father Kathaleen Sweeney and John P. Sweeney, her Father-in-law and Mother-in-law David and Mary Tomich, her sister Mary Allen, her nephews Tom McGrath, Steven Allen and Dave Sutey and her sister-in-law Phyllis Sutey.

Joan is survived by her son William D. Tomich of Butte, her Daughter Davene (Bill Rundle) of Butte, her grandchildren Brett (Jessica) Rundle of Missoula, Brittney (Kevin) Duncan of Butte, Jon( Haley) Tomich of Missoula, Great Grandchildren Finley Estelle Rundle, Jaxon William Duncan and a great-granddaughter and great-grandson who will be due in 2017, her brothers and sisters-in-law Tom and Sue McGrath and Dan and Kathy Sweeney, numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call after 11:00 AM Tuesday in the Duggan Dolan Chapel for visitations.  Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon in the Duggan Dolan Chapel.   Private placement of ashes will take place at a later date. Memorials may be made to Easter Seals Highlands Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice.
