Obituary: John Van Dyken

Posted: Updated:

On March 8, 2017, John Van Dyken, 95, was taken into glory.  John was born in Manhattan, MT, on June 8, 1921, to Peter and Jennie Van Dyken.

John grew up on a small farm west of Belgrade, MT.  After graduating from the 8th grade in Belgrade, he stayed home to help with the farm work.  In the fall of 1941 he attended one year of Bible school at Multnomah School of the Bible in Portland, Oregon.  After returning to the family farm, John felt compelled to join the service in January of 1944 by enlisting in the Navy to serve his country in WWII.  Upon graduation from boot camp in Dearborn, MI, he was sent to refrigeration school in York, PA.

It was while in York that he met DeEtta Schroeder at the York Gospel Center.  After serving two years in the Navy and a long-distance relationship with DeEtta, they were married on Easter Sunday, April 21, 1946.  John and DeEtta returned to the Gallatin Valley where he farmed for nearly 40 years.  After leaving farming in 1985, John was soon hired by First Security Bank to greet customers and monitor the parking lot.  John spent the next 25 years getting to know his bank customers all by name, handing out suckers, talking sports and growing tomato plants that were the envy of Bozeman.  After retiring from his second career, he moved to Portland to live out his last years with his son, Dan.

John was preceded in death by his wife, DeEtta; son, David; sister, Jennie Hespen; brothers, Herman Van Dyken, Hilco Van Dyken, and Fred Van Dyken.  He is survived by a daughter, Linda Brownson (Gary) of Billings, MT; son, Dan (Melissa) of Portland, OR; daughter–in-law, Anne Van Dyken of Manzanita, OR; sisters-in-law, Nell Van Dyken and Edith Van Dyken; numerous nieces and nephews; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 13 at 2 p.m. at Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service followed by interment at Sunset Hills Cemetery.

Arrangements are in the care of Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service.  www.dokkennelson.com
