HELENA -

Two black bear cubs that were orphaned when their mother was hit and killed by a pickup truck have been found and are safe.

The sow died at the scene of the incident that happened on Highway 200 several miles east of Rogers Pass on Tuesday.

The driver of the truck was not injured, and there are no reports that the driver had been speeding or was impaired at the time.

The mother bear died at the scene, and her two cubs ran away.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks game wardens captured the two cubs on Wednesday.

“We located their den and found both cubs in it,” said Fish, Wildlife and Parks game warden Brady Murphy.

The cubs are just a couple of months old.

Murphy estimated that each cub weighed about five pounds.

They have been taken to the FWP wildlife center in Helena to be cared for.
