Obituary: Thomas Edward McGrath

Posted: Updated:

On Saturday, May 13, 2017, our beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather, Thomas Edward McGrath,  passed away peacefully at his home after a prolonged illness. Tom was born in Butte on February 19, 1942, to Kathleen Burke McGrath and John Sweeney.  Tom had two older sisters Joan and Mary and younger brother Dan.  Tom attended St. Lawrence grade schools and was a graduate of Butte High School. Tom served in the U.S. Navy.  When Tom arrived home he began his career as a painter with his father, where he later took over the business.  He joined the Painter’s Union in 1965. He began working for Butte Silver Bow on Nov 1, 1970, and retired 29 years later.  Tom was a proud member Centerville Fire Department, Knights of Columbus and the Hibernian Ancient Order

Tom married Virginia Dallaserra in 1964, together had five children Tommy, Danny, Joe, Teresa and Lisa. They divorced in 1975.  Tom then married Sue McGrath in 1989.  Sue cared for Tom selflessly through his illness. Tom’s legacy is his children and ten grandchildren who he was very proud of and loved dearly.

Tom was an accomplished wrestler in high school, he later shared his passion with his sons.  He coached the Saint Ann’s football team in 1968, where he went undefeated for two years.

Tom enjoyed the outdoors with his family, especially hunting in the Ruby Valley and camping at Elk Horn Hot Springs.  He had a difficult time after losing his oldest son Tommy in a tragic vehicle accident at the age of 15.  Tom is now at peace and reunited in heaven with his son Tommy.   We are confident they are smiling down upon us and watching over each of us.

Tom was preceded in death by his son Tommy McGrath, mother Kathleen and father John P. Sweeney, his sisters Mary Allen and Joan (Bill) Tomich, his nephew, Steven Allen. Tom is survived by his wife Sue, sons Danny McGrath (Wendy), Joe McGrath (Ang), daughters Teresa McGrath (Tom Darragh), Lisa Hanson (Chris). Grandchildren Tommy and Hannah McGrath, Jonathan Allen, Payton and Gracie McGrath, Levi, Lacie and Logann Lovshin, Beau and Bailee Hanson, brother Dan Sweeney (Kathy), cousin John Burke, and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at St. Patrick’s at 12:00 PM Thursday, May 18th. Relatives and friends can join the family at 11:00 AM prior to the services.

Graveside services will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, then Reception at K.C. Hall per Tom’s wishes.

Memorials may be made to Knights of Columbus or the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

NOAA and the Climate Prediction Center issued their winter weather outlook for 2017-2018. 2nd year in a row La Nina will likely shape our weather and climate patterns December through February. Climate Prediction Center says there is a 55% to 65% that a growing La Nina in the equatorial pacific will be in place by the time winter officially starts. This outlook is good for Montana if you like cold and snowy winter seasons like last year, however, it may not be enough to wipe out...
