The Chief Joseph Scenic Highway from Cody to Cooke City is open to traffic this weekend, but travelers will need to exercise extra caution.
A reduced speed limit of 30 miles per hour is in effect for a portion of the scenic road near mile post 26 due to a slide that caused one lane of the roadway to drop some four feet.
Thanks to a new expanded shoulder area that allows traffic to get around the slide, that part of the road is open for two-way traffic, according to Cody Beers, and information officer with the Wyoming Department of Transportation .
That part of the Chief Joseph received a foot of snow overnight.
State geology crews have been drilling to assess the stability of the slide area Beers said.
The estimated cost of the cleanup effort is $653,000.
Again a reduced speed limit of 30 miles per hour is in effect for that portion of the Chief Joseph Highway.
