Obituary: Alex Lynn Thatcher

Posted: Updated:

Alex Lynn Thatcher left us too early at the age of 23, on May 21, 2017, following a train accident in Miles City, Montana.

The world became a little bit better on June 25, 1993, when she was born to William “Chunky” Thatcher and Leah Francisco at St. James Hospital in Butte. Alex was the oldest of seven, paving the way for her younger siblings: Hattie, Baylee, Tucker, Kloie, Cutter, and Sofee. This, out of many, was one of her proudest (and probably most difficult) contributions to this earth.

With the help of many incredible and influential people – Alex excelled in every aspect of life. After working towards becoming a valedictorian of Butte High School, Alex chose to pursue a degree in Petroleum Engineering at Montana Tech, graduating in December of 2015. Academics were not her only strong suit, however. Since she was little, Alex worked hard to become a very accomplished athlete. Over the years, this is where she formed some of her most important relationships - especially with her father. After earning high school All-State honors in both volleyball and softball, Alex’s drive and competitiveness allowed her to play volleyball for Montana Tech for a year before choosing to focus on school.

Alex was the type of person we all wish we could be. Between being both the smartest and wittiest one in the room at all times, no one could really compare to her. She thrived on being the best and expected it from everyone around her. These qualities, however, didn’t yield her from being humble and kind. Wise beyond her years, Alex provided the advice no one wanted to hear even though they needed it. This allowed Alex to form unbreakable bonds with the people around her.

Alex was preceded in death by her grandparents, William John and Eileen Marie Thatcher; grandmother, Lynn Francisco; and honorary brother, Kyle Alexander Burgman.

Alex is survived by her parents, Chunky Thatcher and Leah Francisco. She is also survived by her younger siblings, her Grandpa Bob Francisco, and lifelong friend, Jenni Schneider. Furthermore, she is survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and her two favorite dogs in the world, Lucy and Riggs, who will carry her legacy with them as they go on throughout this life.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, May 30, at the Maroon Activities Center, with the service immediately following at noon. A reception will be held at the Maroon Activities Center following interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Please, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either the Alex Thatcher Memorial Fund at Mountain West Federal Credit Union at 400 E. Park, or to the Alex Thatcher Memorial Scholarship at the Montana Tech Foundation.

We love you long time, sis. Try to find some angels who are dumb enough to play clean up volleyball with you.
