Copper City Trails opens near Three Forks

Posted: Updated:

THREE FORKS - Planning for Copper City Trails, a Mountain bike friendly trail system outside of Three Forks began about three years ago. On Saturday it finally opened up.

"I'm currently trying not to cry. I'm very, very excited to see this," said Tim Hawke, the project manager.

Hawke and other members of the Southwest Montana Mountain Bike Association (SWMMBA) went to the Butte Bureau of Land Management with the idea to make the Copper City Trails.

"Tim and his group came to us and said hey we got a great idea. How about a non-motorized trail system optimized for mountain bike use and we said sounds good show us what you got," said Scott Haight, the BLM field officer.

The trails were built from donations and plenty of volunteer work, and on Saturday in celebration on National Public Lands Day bikers took off on the trails.

"It's great, National Public Lands Day and to be on public lands and doing trail work here," said Randall Russo, the project coordinator for SWMMBA.

This is just phase one of the project. SWMMBA hopes that by the time they are finished they will have 100 miles of trails.
