Volunteers pick up trash along Gallatin River

BOZEMAN - A national effort called American Rivers is aiming to clean up rivers across the country. 

There were quite a few people out along the Gallatin River Saturday, but it wasn't to catch fish. They're out here cleaning up garbage along the river banks.

"We want to ensure the Gallatin stays healthy and one of the ways we can do that is to pick up trash along the river that's found its way over the last year or so," said Kyle Mehrens, co-chair of the Greater Gallatin Watershed Council. 

This is the first time that the Greater Gallatin Watershed Council has held the cleanup event. There are about 30 volunteers at the Axtell Bridge Fishing Access and the Cameron Bridge Fishing Access.

"We just identified them as areas that see a lot of traffic throughout the summer and we thought it would be a good place to put our energy," said Mehrens. 

Volunteers walked along the river and in the woods picking up the remnants of summer recreation. 

"A lot of beer bottles and alcohol paraphernalia," said volunteer Caroline Stanley. 

Of course, these volunteers use the Gallatin quite a bit, so they felt that this is their way to give back.

"I wanted to come out and contribute to some of the resources we use all spring and into the fall and make sure the resource is available to everyone."

Although the goal is to clean up 100 pounds of trash, many of the volunteers said they weren't finding that much and they were glad to see the Gallatin clean.

American Rivers is the leading organization working to protect and restore the nation’s rivers and streams.
