BILLINGS - On Nov. 3, 2006, Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Deputy David Briese died in the line of duty.
On Friday, the 11th anniversary of his death, friends and family members gathered as a portion of Interstate 90 in Yellowstone County was dedicated in his honor.
Briese died in a single-vehicle crash on I-90 as he was responding to a call for assistance. The cause of the crash remains unclear.
The David Briese Memorial Highway now runs from mile markers 445 to 451. The designated stretch spans from the spot Briese died to past the Yellowstone County Detention Facility, where he began his Yellowstone County law enforcement career.
“We always called him a real-life cartoon character,” said Deputy Kent O’Donnell, a former colleague and friend. “He was out of proportion…a weightlifter with huge shoulders and arms and then this funny, high-pitched laugh…he always smiled and was always happy-go-lucky, so that is how we want to remember today.”
The bill to dedicate the highway was passed in both the state house and senate with overwhelming support.
