Expert warn of avalanche danger after recent snows

Posted: Updated:

BOZEMAN  - Up to 3 feet of new snow fell over the weekend in the Bridger and Hyalite Ranges and 4 feet of snow fell near Cooke City.

This is creating high avalanche danger with unstable snowpack this early in the season.

The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center has warnings for enthusiasts trekking in the backcountry.

“All of this snow, if you're getting out to ski or hike around or snowmobile out in the mountains, the snow has definitely increased the avalanche danger,” said Alex Marienthal, Avalanche Specialist with Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center. “With a little bit of wind, wind loaded slopes create a more instability and can be more dangerous so there is definitely some avalanche problems.”
