FFA students compete, learn at MSU expo

Posted: Updated:

BOZEMAN - Thousands of Montana Future Farmers of America gathered at Montana State University over the weekend at the John Deere Ag Expo.

“I took an 8th-grade Ag Class and my advisers and my friends kind of peer pressured me into it and then I kind of fell in love with it,” said Reiley Alik, Judith Gap FFA member. “I have been immersing myself in it and going to everything I could.”

Students from around Montana just like Alik put their agricultural skills to the test this weekend at MSU. The John Deere Ag Expo highlights everything that FFA represents from technical skills to leadership and marketing.

“We are more of a production state than other states, so you do see a lot of farming and ranching but there are a lot of other agriculture industries,” said Gwynn Simeniuk, MSU student.

“ A lot of students who may major in business can work at a bank and be an ag lender. And food processing is something we are also trying to do more of with the state of Montana.

Besides getting to learn about the agriculture industries, the John Deere Ag Expo is competition for FFA students that will qualify them for nationals.

The students plan to make agriculture a part of their future - but also share the importance of the ag industry in Montana.

“Here in Montana, agriculture is the largest industry at $4 billion and we want to make sure we have students that are prepared to go into the workforce and prepared to help our Montana economy,” said Simeniuk.
