Impressive Snow Water Content For Mid November

Posted: Updated:

This is a very rare treat to see mid November with this much snow and holding impressive water content.

According the NRCS (Natural Resource Conservation Service) the percent of normal values across Montana are "Well Above" normal for all but one reporting station.

Much of western and SW Montana snotel sites are reporting water content percentages in the 136% to 230% range. More storms are likely this week and more mountain snow is coming to Montana. Great news for ski resorts opening up around Thanksgiving but all that snow especially in wind loaded areas means higher avalanche danger.

The promise of another weak La Niña this winter season producing above normal precipitation and this early boost to mountain snowpack in mid November has us leaning toward high hopes of adequate water needs next Spring and Summer.

I typically hold off on reporting snowpack and snow water conditions until after the first of the year as there usually just isn't much to report on through the Fall months and early Winter. This year the news is just to incredible not to report on it for Montana.

This graphic below shows the coverage of snow across Montana and there are only a few areas with no snow on the ground right now. So if you have friends or family visiting over the Thanksgiving Holiday be sure to take advantage of the great mountain snowpack and early ski season.
