U.S. Rep. Greg Gianforte honors two Butte veterans

Posted: Updated:

BUTTE -  The Assembly call was made at Butte’s Marine Corps League hall in Butte to honor two local veterans, Michael Lawson and the late Phillip Lyons. U.S. Rep. Greg Gianforte honored these men along with other veterans around the state who should honorable service in the military and to their communities.

“Montana has the second highest number of veterans per capita of any state in the country and we all have an incredible debt, so on behalf of the U.S. government and the communities of our state, we need to say ‘thank you’ and remember the commitments we’ve made,” Gianforte said.

Lawson, who served in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War, was grateful to be recognized but dedicated his reward to all veterans.

“I’m honored, I’m humbled but it’s for everybody, I mean, I do a lot of things, but I can’t do it alone, but the people who help and are a part of it are a team,” Lawson said.

Phillip Lyons., who sadly passed away on Jan. 1st, was affectionately known as “Herk” and that’s because even though he was a short guy, he was very strong, but his daughter said he had an incredibly big heart.

“He was a wonderful community figure, never forgot Butte, never forgot his veteran ties, never forgot his family, he had a lot of love in his little heart. He was a little guy, but he was a giant. He was always my hero; my dad was always my hero,” said Lyon’s daughter Deborah Lyons Maguire.

And both are heroes for everyone else.
