BUTTE – A late-evening fire in Uptown Butte Monday caused more than 6,000 customers to lose power, according to a news release from Northwestern Energy.

The fire occurred just before midnight to a detached garage of a residence at 826 W. Granite St. and spread to a neighboring garage at 830 W. Granite St., according to Butte Fire Chief Jeff Miller. The structures were a total loss and two vehicles were damaged in the fire. No injuries were reported. A utility pole and power lines were damaged in the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Crews from the Butte utility company have been working all morning and have restored power to most customers by 8 a.m. in the area of Park, Broadway and Granite streets west of Clark Street.
