Man rescued from Bob Marshall Wilderness

A 68-year-old California man was airlifted from the Bob Marshall Wilderness on Tuesday morning after becoming separated from his outfitting group.

According to the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's Office, the man, identified as George Brown, left the outfitter camp around 12 p.m. on Sunday with a backpack and some supplies.

He was reported missing around 10:30 a.m. on Monday after not returning to the camp near the Pretty Prairie Ranger Station. The outfitting group had been searching for him since late Sunday evening.

A four-man search and rescue team was dispatched to the area with assistance from Two Bear Air and the Back Country Horsemen of Montana. Efforts were unsuccessful on Monday.

On Tuesday, the search and rescue members partnered with the Back Country Horsemen again and began the search in the early morning. They found Brown alive, but with a broken lower left leg.

He had suffered the broken leg while exploring an area about a mile from the trail. Rescuers were able to move him to a horse and take him back to the Ranger Station where he was airlifted to Great Falls by Mercy Flight.
