BIG SKY — It’s been a busy winter for Gallatin County County Search and Rescue in West Yellowstone with snowmobile incidents.

On This Week in Fish and Wildlife, a member of SAR stressed the importance of proper equipment.

Robert Pohle, Game Warden and member of the Gallatin County Search And Rescue noted that when temperatures are this cold, a small incident can turn into a major situation in a short period of time. He also noted that today’s snowmobiles are high-performance vehicles.

Many of the people who go to West Yellowstone to ride are not experienced with those machines. Pohle says slow down, and get to know how the machine handles before you push it to its limits.

Southwest Montana is dealing with avalanche conditions this year as well. Pohle noted there have been 20 avalanche fatalities across the country this year, 14 of them just since the first of February. He says alwayscheck avalanche conditions in the area you intend to ride, but pay attention to the conditions you find when you get there too.
