BUTTE — “Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, I am free at last,” read Montana Tech basketball player Sindou Diallo.

Players from Montana Tech’s basketball team read to elementary students in Butte Monday about the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

“Just kind of understand what Martin Luther King did for our culture and just us as Americans,” said Tech forward Dylan Pannabecker.

The players spent the day at Hillcrest Elementary reading a book about King’s life, and having the children do a worksheet about what they believe was King’s vision for civil rights in America.

The student athletes said it’s important for children to learn about the man who was killed for his beliefs more than 50 years ago.

“It’s important because, I mean, he did a lot of great things for the community, you know. He’s the reason why blacks and whites can go to the same school, you know, and just making everything fair,” said Diallo.
