Man allegedly cashes stolen checks while completing Butte Pre-Release program

Posted

BUTTE – An inmate at the Butte Pre-Release Center is accused of cashing stolen checks.

Butte police say 47-year-old James Whitaker cashed two checks stolen from a local business in the amount of $1,800 earlier this month while he was being held at the Pre-Release Center. Officials say this is an unusual case.

“It doesn’t happen that often that we have actual clients of the Pre-Release going through the program commit crime. They do get violated for breaking the rules of the center and are sent back, but as far as criminal behavior it’s not that common,” said Butte Undersheriff George Skuletich.

Whitaker who has a lengthy criminal record was finishing his time in the Pre-Release program for a criminal endangerment conviction in Yellowstone County.
