HELENA – The Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office reports a large group of people was safely air lifted out of the Scapegoat Wilderness on Tuesday.

Thirteen people became stranded near the headwaters of Dearborn River west of Augusta on Monday night and called for help when they determined they couldn’t safely cross the river.

Two Bear Air out of Whitefish was called in to assist with the rescue with video from the helicopter showing a muddy and swollen Dearborn River — and the group’s camp near the banks of the river.

Lewis and Clark Sheriff’s Captain Brent Colbert told MTN News that as the people were flown out they were taken to a landing area where they could be escorted by deputies to Augusta.

Captain Colbert says no one was injured as a result of the incident.
