The lighting-sparked Bacon Rind Fire continues to slowly back down the slope high above Highway 191 in southern Montana and is gradually moving through heavy, dead, and down timber with occasional torching of trees in other directions.
On Saturday, increased cloud cover in the afternoon raised humidity within the fire, but no moisture fell over the fire area.
Smoke may be visible from Highway 191, but the road is not threatened at this time.
Officials advised caution when driving as smoke could affect the road. Drivers are asked to only stop in designated pullouts.
The fire is currently not threatening any structures.
Due to hazardous, heavy, dead, and down timber as well as many standing dead trees, fire managers are not putting firefighters on the ground at this time. They are, however, looking for opportunities to engage the fire if it makes its way toward Highway 191 and private inholdings to the north.
The Bacon Rind Fire is currently at 412 acres with two 20-person crews and two light helicopters assigned to it.
The Bacon Rind Trail in the Yellowstone National Park and the Lee Metcalf Wilderness of the Custer Gallatin National Forest remain closed.
The fire is located about 20 miles south of Big Sky and 23 miles north of West Yellowstone.
(July 28, 2018) The Reynolds Lake Fire near Darby and the Highway 37 Fire near Libby continue to burn in western Montana.
Crews are making progress fighting the Reynolds Lake Fire, which did not grow Friday and is holding steady at 1,068 acres.
The lightning-sparked fire is 80 percent contained.
Some crews have moved out and now 109 total personnel are working the fire including two engines and two helicopters.
The Highway 37 Fire near Libby was started by a discarded smoking material and is currently estimated at 70 acres and 40 percent containment.
The fire lines are holding and firefighters are using water to suppress any hot spots and to continue mop-up operations.
Firefighters are also securing the fire’s edge and will use respiratory protection when mopping up as the fire is located near a superfund asbestos site.
The Forest Service is taking extra measures to ensure employee health and safety from potential asbestos exposure due to the former W.R. Grace Mine in the area.
