GALLATIN GATEWAY – While spending time on the river this summer, it’s important to think about all safety measures.

In the wake of recent tragedies on the Yellowstone River, we decided to take a closer look at safety precautions as you’re spending time on the water.

With all the beautiful rivers Montana has to offer, there are a few things you should be doing to keep yourself safe. Whether you’re on a boat, in a tube, or even fly fishing,  it’s something simple that can keep you the safest.

“I think the most important thing to do safety-wise is to make sure you’re wearing a life vest. I recommend a class five life jacket. This allows you to have your head back and it keeps your head afloat,” said Montana Whitewater Rafting Trip Leader Robert Price.

It is required for children 11 and younger to be wearing a life vest at all times, but everyone should be wearing one as a safety precaution when on the water.

Price said it’s not a great idea to ever be alone on the river. Something that is very helpful to keep with you is rope in case it is needed to toss to someone needing help in the event of falling in. Understanding how strong the current is and knowing the rapids is essential too.

“Western rivers here, we want to make sure you’re not standing up in rapids, you can get your foot trapped,” Price said.

Thinking about your safety before taking off on the river can make a difference. No matter how experienced you are on the water, it’s important to keep these tips in mind.
