BUTTE - What was once a dirty, smelly alley way in Uptown Butte may soon be a nice trendy place to hang out.

“We hope that they’ll utilize it to eat lunch and have coffee in the morning, have breakfast and come out here and join their friends in some outside activities,” said project organizer Julie Jaksha.

The alley connecting West Park Street and Broadway was cleaned and decorated with planters and overhead lighting to create a pedestrian friendly area.

“Our hope is that it brings in people into the Uptown area then they stay and shop and eat and dine and walk around the Uptown area and check out what’s here,” said Jaksha.

M&M Café owner Selina Pankovich said, “I think it’s exciting, I think anytime you can take something that doesn’t look good and make it look good and more pleasing to everybody, I think there’s a lot of potential.”

Organizers of the project say this is just the beginning. They hope to add more events in the future and by next year maybe even extend it into other alleys.

“We have a couple of muralists that have stepped forward, in fact we have four of them here in Butte, local artists that are going to come in and do some art work on all of the walls for us in here,” said Jaksha.
