BUTTE - Butte is planning to have students back in its public schools at the end of summer.

“We’re going to get kids in school, we’re going to make sure they're safe where they’re supported,” said Butte School Superintendent Judy Jonart.

The plan will include students taking classes in blocks to keep them in one classroom to avoid walking the halls of the school.

“We’re dealing with over 1,200 students at Butte High School so it’s critically important to limit the traffic,” said Jonart.

The school district will even recommend requiring students and staff to wear masks while at school.

“We’re an educational community in our school district and we should be the educational leaders and, you know, masks are important, we know the data behind that and we’re going to model that behavior,” said Jonart.

If classes are allowed to commence again in these buildings this fall, the superintendent believes that this in-person instruction is going to be a good thing for the students.

“Definitely in-person instruction is a far greater and better situation for learning. Also it’s easier to build relationships that way,” said Jonart.

The Butte Health Department will have to review the plan before approval. Classes would begin August 31.
