BUTTE – In this season of giving, organizers of the Mining City Clothing Drive are taking the word “giving” to a higher level.
“Everything’s free. You fill up a nice leaf bag full of clothes, boots, shoes and they’re free for the taking,” said event sponsor Chris Ackerman.
For 21 years, groups of sponsors have been collecting clothing from the community to give away to anyone in need. This year’s giveaway is Saturday at the Maroon Activity Center on East Mercury Street.
Volunteers say this event helps people during this tight time of year.
“It’s the time of year where it’s hard sometimes for families to just afford things,” said event organizer Daynen Alaicker.
Students from Butte Central volunteered to help sort through the thousands of donated articles of clothing, fold them and stock them in the proper category.
“I think it’s great to get involved in the community and help everyone out if you can,” said Butte Central student Emily Campbell.
And one thing the kids here have found among this mountain of clothing is just how generous this community can be.
“It just shows generosity towards other people in their own community and it shows more selflessness than we might see today,” said student Sudha Davis.
Classmate Jayden Mitchell agreed: “I’ve met a lot of people who don’t have a lot and my family used to be one of those people at times. It’s just great to give back to other people.”
The event begins at 10 a.m. Saturday and goes until 1 p.m. All are invited.
