Work on Butte’s new Maintenance Shop off Beef Trail Road is underway.

The new shop will replace the current one, off Civic Center Road, to make room for cleaning up a century’s worth of mining waste buried in that area. The $14 million project is being paid for Montana’s Natural Resource Damage Program.

“That’s a good benefit to the county, we’ll have a brand new maintenance shop to service our vehicles and it’s all being paid for by the parrot tailings budget,” said Assistant Planning Director Dylan Pipinich.

The current shop will stay open until the new one is completed, which could be ready by January.

“Yeah, we know there are some weather issues that could come up. Markovich is going to have to get a lot of stuff done by winter to get on that January schedule, but so far we’re on schedule,” said Pipinich.

Markovich Construction reports that the project is going well and should be ready in the new year.

“So they’ll have a nice brand new place to work, it’s something the city can be proud of and it’ll be functional for years to come,” said project foreman Gordon Mahood.

The building they’re working on is more than 370 feet long, it’s called the cold storage building. It’s just one of many large buildings on the property, but Markovich Construction says they’re used to working on big projects.

“We did the airport, we’re doing the VA Home, we’ve done the apartment complexes, Markovich we do big project like this all the time and this particular one seems to be going well to me,” said Mahood.
