Phase two of the removal of the Parrot Tailings near the Butte Civic Center will begin March 1.

"We’re at the next phase at the Parrot Tailings removal. With the Parrot Tailings removal, we need to shut down Civic Center Road." said Butte-Silver Bow Chief Executive J.P. Gallagher.

When the removal begins, Civic Center Road will be shut down all the way to Texas Avenue. The stretch of road as well as the Civic Center walking trail will be shut down for two and a half years. A detour will be marked through Grand Avenue.

People will still have access to the Civic Center and its parking lots from Harrison Avenue, and the closure will not affect the COVID vaccination clinics.

"We’re making sure that the COVID clinic will continue to run as is, and we’ll work with our partners down at the Health Department, St. James Community Health, Southwest Montana Community Health Center; and the Civic Center staff themselves will continue to work and make sure that the COVID clinics go off without a hitch." Gallagher said.

Phase two will remove an estimated 310,000 cubic yards of mine waste and slag, which is roughly 26,000 dump truck loads.
