Suspect in hit-and-run that injured Butte teenager identified

BUTTE — A Butte man is in custody after allegedly hitting a teenage boy crossing the street with his vehicle and then leaving the scene on Friday morning, Jan. 26, 2024.

According to a Butte-Silver Bow Law Enforcement media release, 63-year-old William Sirucek of Butte is facing charges of negligent vehicular assault and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (4th or subsequent offense).

Sirucek is accused of hitting a 14-year-old boy as the boy was crossing South Main Street at the intersection with Porphyry Street, then leaving the scene. Sirucek was reportedly followed by a witness and detained when he stopped at the Walgreens on Harrison Avenue.

Court documents say Sirucek has four prior convictions for driving under the influence. He is currently being held at the Butte-Silver Bow Detention Center pending his arraignment on the charges stemming from Friday's alleged incident.

Sirucek is due to make his initial court appearance at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

BUTTE — A teen boy was struck by a vehicle on South Main Street in Butte on Friday, Jan. 26, 2024, according to Butte-Silver Bow Law Enforcement.

Butte Sheriff Ed Lester said in a media release that the incident happened at the intersection of South Main and Porphyry Street around 8:15 a.m. on Friday. The 14-year-old boy was walking east across Main Street when he was struck by a passenger car traveling southbound.

According to Sheriff Lester, the car briefly stopped and then allegedly drove away. A witness followed the vehicle to Walgreens on Harrison Avenue. Officers responded to Walgreens and took the driver, a 63-year-old Butte man, into custody.

The release said the boy was taken to St. James Healthcare and is "conscious and alert" and currently being evaluated.

The investigation is ongoing, according to Sheriff Lester.
