BUTTE, Mont. – Butte-Silver Bow County Commissioners have the ability to authorize a $142,000 contract with Jay Fortune Construction to repair the steps outside of the Butte-Silver Bow Courthouse.

Nearly all summer the steps located on the right side of the main entrance to the courthouse have been closed to the public because of damage.

County Building Director Pat Holland says over the last century these steps have been worn down by time, weather, and use. Holland said over the years the county has done repairs to make sure the steps stayed intact, but the foundation needs to be rebuilt.

“We did remove one step for observation to see what was there, and we are still somewhat of a Pandora’s Box,” said Holland. “Until we remove the steps, we don’t really know exactly what is there and the methods they will take to repair it.”

Holland said if the authorization is granted by the commissioners the steps should be done within 90 days of starting the project.
