The Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) said 12 occupants of a plane were killed in a crash Sunday morning in Butler, Missouri — about an hour south of Kansas City.

Authorities said the plane was taking the passengers up to skydive and that troopers were near the Butler, Missouri, Memorial Airport assisting following the crash, which was reported around 11:30 a.m. local time.

The Bates County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to avoid the area near Butler Municipal Airport for an undetermined amount of time.
